LETSTALK ANNUAL CELL PHONE ETIQUETTE SURVEY:
MORE PEOPLE FIND CELL PHONE USE IN CARS AND SUPERMARKETS ACCEPTABLE

Fewer Approve of Cell Phone Use in Bathrooms and Restaurants

San Francisco, CA (March 14, 2006) — Online wireless retailer LetsTalk.com today announced the results of its annual etiquette survey that finds U.S. adult cell phone owners are less likely to feel it is generally acceptable to speak on their cell phones in the bathroom or in restaurants than they were two years ago. But watch out for more drivers phoning from their cars and shoppers clutching cell phones as they navigate supermarket aisles.

“More than 200 million people in the U.S. now have cell phones,” said Delly Tamer, CEO of LetsTalk. “As that number has grown, we see that people are beginning to put up boundaries and evolve social norms about when and where they should use their cell phones. Bathrooms, movies and theaters are out. Cars and supermarkets are in.”

LetsTalk first commissioned a survey of cell phone etiquette in 2000. The 2006 survey was conducted in January 2006 by Harris Interactive®, which polled a representative sample of over 2,000 U.S. adults, of whom 86% own a cell phone.

The survey asked, “In which of the following places, if any, do you feel it is generally acceptable to speak on your cell phone?”

The 2006 results follow compared to past surveys:

  • In the bathroom
    2006 38%
    2003 62%
    2002 47%
    2000 39%

About the Survey

Harris Interactive® fielded the online survey on behalf of LetsTalk.com between January 3 and 5, 2006 among a nationwide sample of 2,119 U.S. adults 18 years of age or older — of whom 1,815 own a cell phone. The data were weighted to be representative of the total U.S. adult population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race/ethnicity and propensity to be online. In theory, with a probability sample of this size, one can say with 95 percent certainty that the results for the overall sample have a sampling error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points and the sample of those who own a cell phone has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. This online sample was not a probability sample.
